The advice

We often see the same educational advice in magazines and on the web:

  • The ability to build an imaginary world is essential to a child’s development
  • Reading to your child helps him develop his imagination and learn more vocabulary
  • If you want your child to be a reader, read to him/her as soon as you can, even as young as 1 year old.
  • To play is to learn: children will learn many thing without noticing when they play

All children are different. It can prove challenging for a young child, even a quiet one, to sit down and listen to a story.

Some children will stay calmly seated, even as young as a year old, listening carefully to the story told by their parents (or any adult). Others will find it difficult even at a later age.

In my personal experience, my two-year-old would be restless and instead of listening to the story she would try to get her hands on the reader’s smartphone…

The live performance

The big Fabric Theater (storytelling play mat) is a live performance. Children are involved in the story and it helps them concentrate.

The vocabulary

Even if you have read a story each and every night to your child from the age of one, even if you talk to him/her a lot, a 3 year-old toddler has a limited vocabulary. They know about 800 words (according to the research of Philippe Boisseau, approved by the French Ministry of Education). A child this age can encounter difficulties following a story because certain words are unknown to him/her.

It is easy to put yourself in their shoes, it is the exact same experience as an adult being told something in a foreign language. When you don’t have the required level of grammar and vocabulary, it is very complicated to understand what is going on in the story, even for an adult. It is the same for a toddler.

“Playing” the story in the fabric theater will enable her/him to get an interest for the story and learn new words.

Nuage dans le ciel

A little show created by the children

Of course a cartoon will also associate a story and an image. However, when kids are in front of the TV, they are passive and cannot take the illustrator’s place. The Fabric Theater creates a live performance, it provides an illustration but keeps the child active and he can partake in the story itself.

We are all different, and kids are too. Some learn better by hearing things, others by seeing things and others need to manipulate objects to learn. With the fabric theater they can be directors, move around the characters and objects as they like, grasp the meaning of the story and make it theirs.

This is also an occasion to share a moment with the kids, parents, or grandparents. We enjoy telling the story and children enjoy listening to it, we play together with the characters in the theater.
